Co-management

Co-management is not an after thought or regulatory tick the box. We must work with mining companies to protect culture and give Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura people an equal say in what happens on their Country.

It will apply to every aspect of a mine life cycle from the planning to the closure and rehabilitation. It requires mutual obligation and shared responsibility, the miner and the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura  people must be committed to the best outcomes for it to work successfully.

It makes clear how we both communicate and resolve differences. It gives PKKPAC and the community a greater role to work on the ground monitoring and engaging with the mining people. And it sets out what the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura people want to achieve from what happens on their Country – protection of culture and environment, and economic and social opportunity.

Congratulations To the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura People

The 2nd of September marks the anniversary on which we, the PKKP People, celebrate our Native Title Consent Determination held at House Creek on Mount Stuart Station recognising our native title rights. Since that day, our connection to country and culture has grown from strength to strength.

We must acknowledge our PKKP community, especially our Elders both past and present.

A quote from our Native Title Determination,

“We’re all one family, and now this journey has finally ended. We’ve always known who we are and where our Country is, but now we’ve been formally recognised by the Court. This gives us an opportunity to move forward as a family.”

The PKKP Aboriginal Corporation administers the traditional lands and waters of the Puutu Kunti Kurrama people and the Pinikura people on their behalf.

These lands and waters cover approximately 10,888 square kilometres of Western Australia’s Pilbara region, between Onslow and Tom Price.

The PKKP native title claim is made up of two separate but related language groups, the Puutu Kunti Kurrama People and the Pinikura People, who together claim rights and interests within the claim area.
